Product Overview

Step into the dramatic early career of one of history's greatest female artists. This reproduction masterfully preserves the intense realism of the flesh tones; the oppressive weight of the composition; and the palpable distress of the heroine. Painted circa 1610, this masterpiece is Artemisia's earliest known signed and dated work. It is a profound exploration of vulnerability, predatory behavior, and female agency. As clearly seen in the attached file "image_a54c68.jpg", it is a definitive piece for collectors who appreciate Baroque naturalism; dramatic tension; and the uncompromising vision of a young prodigy.

Historical Significance & The Artist

  • Artist: Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1653).
  • Original Created: Circa 1610.
  • Original Location: Schloss Weißenstein, Pommersfelden, Germany.
  • Movement: Italian Baroque.
  • Context: Artemisia completed this earliest surviving work when she was only seventeen. The subject matter is a biblical narrative from the Book of Susanna. In the story, two elders hide in a garden and demand sexual favors from Susanna while she bathes, threatening to falsely accuse her of adultery if she refuses. While this subject was common in European art from the 16th century and often used as an opportunity to portray female nudes for the pleasure of male patrons, Gentileschi completely subverted the tradition. The painting shows how Gentileschi assimilated the realism of Caravaggio without being indifferent to the classicism of the Bolognese School.

The Narrative: A Vision of Intrusion, Weight, and Virtue

Set against a stark stone balustrade, every element in the composition reinforces the quiet, horrifying drama of the ambush.

  • The Oppressive Elders: The work shows a frightened Susanna being accosted by two men who are shown above her. One of the elders silences Susanna by raising his finger to his lips, a gesture that emphasizes the immediate threat of the assault.
  • The Recoiling Heroine: Unlike the passive or flirtatious Susannas painted by her male contemporaries, Artemisia’s subject twists away in authentic revulsion. Her raised hands and anguished expression convey a powerful, realistic response to trauma and violation; a detail perfectly highlighted in the file "image_a54c68.jpg".
  • The Cold Stone: The hard, unyielding stone bench and wall contrast with the soft vulnerability of Susanna's flesh. This stark setting removes any romanticized garden elements; focusing the viewer entirely on the psychological terror of the moment.
