Jacques-Louis David (30 August 1748 – 29 December 1825) was a French painter in the Neoclassical style, widely considered to be the preeminent artist of his era. Moving away from the playful and frivolous Rococo style of the previous generation, he championed a return to classical austerity, precise drawing, and uncompromising moral severity. David was deeply involved in the turbulent politics of his time, serving as an active supporter of the French Revolution; even voting for the execution of the King; and later acting as the principal painter to Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. His masterpieces, such as The Oath of the Horatii, The Death of Marat, and Napoleon Crossing the Alps, remain universally celebrated for their monumental scale, powerful political charge, and defining role in shaping the visual identity of a revolutionary age.
